Setjhaba Ramabenyane

My name is Setjhaba Ramabenyane, a proud alumnus of Glen College of Agriculture. I enrolled at the College in 2020 and successfully graduated in 2022.

During my time at Glen, I had the privilege of serving in student leadership, first as the Student Representative Council (SRC) Treasurer from 2020 to 2021, and later as the SRC President in 2022. These leadership opportunities played a significant role in shaping my personal growth, confidence, and ability to work with and lead others.

Glen College transformed my understanding of agriculture by exposing me to the sector from both a scientific and strategic perspective. The College provided me with practical knowledge and real farming experience, helping me understand what it truly takes to become a farmer, including the opportunities and challenges that come with the agricultural industry.

One of the greatest strengths of Glen College is the dedication of its lecturers and support staff. They are committed to student success and continue to provide guidance and mentorship even after graduation. The relationships I built at Glen have become a valuable network of mentors who continue to support my development within the agricultural sector.

Today, I am a farmer based in Dewetsdorp, specialising in Bonsmara cattle and Meatmaster sheep production. I am also involved in crop production, farming sunflower, maize, and soya beans on leased land in Senekal. The skills and knowledge I acquired at Glen continue to guide my farming decisions and contribute positively to my journey as an agricultural entrepreneur.

Beyond farming, Glen College inspired my passion for agricultural academia and continuous learning. Through the encouragement and mentorship of my former lecturers, I furthered my studies and obtained an Advanced Diploma in Agricultural Management and a Postgraduate Diploma (Honours level) in Agricultural Management. I have also applied to pursue a Master’s degree in Sustainable Agriculture at the University of the Free State.

Being a Glen College graduate has given me a strong foundation, a professional network, and lifelong mentors. Studying at an agricultural college is a valuable opportunity, especially for aspiring farmers, because it provides practical exposure to the realities of farming while preparing students to contribute meaningfully to the agricultural sector.

“Glen College did not only prepare me to become a farmer; it equipped me to become a knowledgeable agricultural professional and lifelong learner.” — Setjhaba Ramabenyane
